Half My Life

by - Friday, September 20, 2013

This year, I turned 36.  I don't feel 36 (although I'm not sure exactly what 36 is really supposed to feel like), and I don't think that I look 36... but alas, I am 36.

If you're wondering, that means I'm only two years from my 20 year high school reunion. Not that I intend on going... but it'll happen whether I'm there or not.

I was thinking today about some of the things I've been doing for half (or more of my life)...

- driving (I got my learners permit the day I turned 16, and my license within days of the minimum three months I had to wait to take my test)
- working (I started my first "real" job at 15, where I stacked books at the local library after school)
- living away from home (I moved out after high school, and with the exception of four summers while I was in university, I've haven't lived at home since. And of those 18 years, 4 were with roommates, 6 with a significant other, and 8 have been totally on my own)
- owning a car (with my mom's help, I purchased my first car at 16... the good old Plymouth Horizon. Since then I've owned a Mazda GLC, a Mazda B2200, a Chevrolet Cavalier and my current VW Golf)

There are also things that I didn't really start (in ernest anyways) until I was half-way through my life...

- travelling.  Before age 18, three countries visited... since age 18, I've added another 28 to that list
- eating asparagus.  Why didn't anyone tell me how great it was earlier in life?
- blogging... it's come a long way since my first geocities page (where I'm pretty sure I coded every word to blink or sparkle), but even as sporadic as I've been lately, blogging is a part of my life

The next big milestone for me is 40... I really hope that by then I feel like a real grown-up.

  1. i love to tell my mom when i am driving and she is trying to tell me what to do...that I have been driving over half my life now....I know what to do!!

but that is a cool post, I should think of all the things I've been doing over half my life....

My mom tells me that at 65 you still feel the same....inside you feel young and you don't recognize the "old person" in the mirror.

  2. I started driving when I was 15.5 and then got my license the day I turned 16. It seems like I've been driving forever (although I know only drive like 2 or 3 times a year if that!).

When i was 21, I lived alone and my mom could barely hold it together she was so worried for me, because she has never lived alone. that always kind of blew my mind.
