Oh... Canada

Why?

Why do we have to mess with something that we beautifully heard no less than 14 times at the Winter 2010 Olympics? Why?

Here is the current Canadian national anthem:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

It is one mighty fine anthem, if I don't say so myself. Not to long, not to short... just perfect.

And now the Canadian government wants to go and change it.

WTF?

You mean we are going to actually spend real money to change the anthem? When we are fighting the end of a recession? When people still can't find work? When education and health care are getting cuts? When everything is getting cut?

Seriously?

I for one am an atheist - and I am all about keeping God in the anthem. I am also all for keeping the "sons command" in there... from what I can figure - the sons mean those that fought for us in war - and I am okay with that (yes - I know that there were women in non-fighting roles in the war - but back in the day it was generally the men that lost their lives for us). Don't mess with what works!!

Let's put our money into something a little more... how should I say this... useful, instead of trying to appease the minority that want it changed.

  1. Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!

I'm with you, 100%. This reminds me of that cute little song on the radio where it's all, "I'm still alive but I'm barely breathing - just prayed to a God that I don't believe in"

... Mm, maybe I just like that song and it doesn't have ANYTHING to do with this post but dude I don't believe in God and I still sing our anthem with pride and have NEVER thought twice about it. Ridiculous.

The Canadian Anthem has already been changed since I was a kid and had to sing it each morning before school started. Leave the darn thing alone will ya. It took a long time for this old gal to forget the original words, so back off. Love Mo

The Canadian Anthem has been changed once already since I was a kid in school where we had to sing it before class started. We also said the Lord's Prayer, had a verse read from the Bible and sang God Save Our Queen. It took a long time for this old gal to forget the original words and adopt the new ones without messing it up. Leave it alone will ya. Love Mo

My last comment skipped out the lines where I mentioned we recited the Lord's Prayer and listened to a verse from the Bible and sang God Save Our Queen before nclass started. Is my comment being monitored by the higher ups? Love Mo

I just read a blurb on line that they federal government is thinking of going back to the original O Canada. I don't have a problem with that as it is gender neutral. It doesn't flow off the tongue the way the newer version does though. Love Mo Looks like my last messages got all screwed up. Time warps

  8. Good news: they've decided NOT to do anything about the anthem.

(CBC reporting that the Prime Minister's Office says the following: "We offered to hear from Canadians on this issue and they have already spoken loud and clear. They overwhelmingly do not want to open the issue,")

Now the only questions is whether or not they'll actually work on the important stuff! ;)
