My Life in a Nutshell
Things had been going well.

I was happy. I was in an (undefined) relationship. My first in over five years.

I’d made some major adult decisions, and was okay with them (cancelling my “once in a lifetime” trip because I just didn’t feel like I’d be in a good enough financial place to make it happen).  Getting my line of credit debt down.  You know... adulting...

And then...

The relationship ended. I got the “I don’t have time for more than this in my life”, which I interpret to mean that the relationship either needed defining (we were exclusive, but weren’t at a time where we were doing things like making life decisions with the input of each other or anything) or ending. He wasn’t ready for more, after coming from a marriage that ended in adultery on the part of his ex-spouse that I still think he was dealing with. Or not dealing with as it may be.

I felt the demise over the course of a week. We were on vacation together (one of those decisions that I regret now, but at the time also knew it would make or break the relationship), and throughout the week, he continued to pull back with each passing day, until the end, when we returned home, he couldn’t help me pack my car fast enough for me to go to my place.

I knew then, but still had a faint glimmer of hope that it wasn’t over and that he just needed time, that it was over.

Two weeks later, after random ghosting and a complete lack of communication, came the “we need to talk” chat.

It lasted all of five minutes, of which I think four were us sitting there in silence. I didn’t cry, but I certainly didn’t express my feelings, as I was fighting the frog in my throat the entire time.

Since then, I have been experiencing some of the worst anxiety I’ve ever had. I’ve struggled with mental health for much of my adult life (and probably before then too, I just either don’t or choose not to remember or didn’t know how to define things), and had gone off my meds when the going was good. And sadly it takes three or so weeks to have those meds start working again... and those three weeks have been the last three weeks. I started taking my meds the day I got back from our vacation. I knew I’d need their help.

It’s so bad that I’ve cried at work. Multiple times. I have great friends that have offered support, but I haven’t really taken them up in the offers. I’ve hermited myself. I’ve spent the last three days in bed. The mornings are rough. I can’t escape the feeling of dread until around lunchtime each day, which really sucks given that I’ve taken to getting up between 3 and 5am each morning. That’s a long time to lay there with your heart and brain racing.

And I started counselling. I know I can get through this, but I don’t want to ever enter into another episode like I’ve had the past three weeks without some techniques to deal. As I told the counsellor, I don’t feel hopeless, I feel helpless.

I’ve started meditating. Meditating has been able to get my body calm, but it hasn’t been able to calm my mind. I’ve run every conversation we’ve had through my head dozens of times. With this anxiety has also come work anxiety - normally it wouldn’t be an issue, but I’m just so overwhelmed right now. I question everything I’ve done. I stress over all of the stuff I need to do. My high standards are working against me.

What if I’m alone forever?

What if I never find anyone that accepts me as me, with the flaws that I have, but also with all that I can offer?

What if I can’t shake this feeling of dread and despair? The feeling that there is something wrong with me?

I know I can be happy with myself. But I also know that I can be happy with someone right for me.

What if that person is out there, but I never find them?

These are not things I expected to be grappling with in my forty second year, especially because it started off with such promise... the beginning of a relationship.

So... this keeps happening...

A couple of weeks ago...
And then just this morning...
Really?  Why?  Why choose a professional hockey player to constantly use as your profile picture?  Is it because I'm the only girl online that knows who Tim Thomas is and keeps calling you on it?

And as a side... why choose Tim Thomas?  The guy is an idiot.  Wouldn't show up to the White House after the Bruins won the Stanley Cup because he's a Republican.  Really?  Douchy move.

Online dating (not that I'm actively searching... I haven't been on a date in a loooong time, and rarely, if ever make contact with anyone online - I spend more time deleting "s'up" messages than anything else) is hard enough as it is - why would you start with a lie?

If you're not happy with your looks, don't put up a public picture.  If you just want to get laid - try Tinder.  But seriously, continuously lying about your age and what you look like is just plain fucking douchy.  Constantly opening and closing accounts is creepy.

And yes... "Mr. Tim Thomas", I'll keep reporting your picture as a fake and I'll keep responding the same way every time you message me.

Seriously.

Because the guys on plentyoffish.com that send me messages have profiles that read like this:

"I like dirt bikeing and campung

I want to find a nice girl to treat me like a personi like to play music and I love my truck Have lots of fun enjoy lifeMeat other people. I just want to have "fun" and hang outI am good person and funny"

I won't even comment on the fact that his occupation is "construckshen".

Seriously.

I couldn't make that shit up if I'd tried.

I hope he finds someone to have "fun" with... unfortunately it won't be me.

I am now into week two of my hiatus from online dating*. Except for eHarmony that is. I freaking caved to a three month membership - and since I paid for it, and they e-mail me my matches, I log on once a day to either send first communication or close matches.

I am feeling rather liberated by not being attached to online dating at the hip. It wasn't getting me anywhere but frustrated, and I was getting tired of old men checking me out and adding me to their favorites lists.

What have I been doing with my spare time? I have been working out every evening, cooking myself healthier dinners and hanging out with friends. And doing laundry - like the whole process - you know where you actually fold and put away the clothes after you wash them?

I can't believe I was neglecting my clothes folding due to online dating. My friend Jenny will be very upset to know that in addition to my lack of folding laundry, my ironing pile is out of control.

And I also haven't worried why "he" hasn't e-mailed me back, or reciprocated my smile, or dealt with any other of the many insecurities that online dating brings out in me... which is rather liberating.

Thankfully for the rest of the world, not so liberating that I have stopped wearing a bra, started burning flags or anything crazy like that, but liberating none the less.

That said, if a hottie came my way and swept me off my feet, I probably wouldn't tell him no.

* My tweet last week was "If I even attempt to log into an online dating site for the next - say 14 days... can somebody please come by and smack me? Thnx in advance."
** I think I have set a record for the number of times a form of the word liberation is used in one blog post. Yay me!

I have previously mentioned bootie call boy... but to recap for you newbies (or those just just don't/care not to remember)... we met back when I lived in BC, we got together for a week while he was there for work, got together a couple of times before I moved here when I came to visit friends, and have hooked up a few times since I moved here.

Nothing even close to regular... and nothing recently.

Because I have decided that I am just not a bootie call kind of girl. Well, I kinda already knew that - but I was testing the waters I guess.

It isn't that I don't like sex. Because I do (and trust me - there was a time I didn't... but we won't go into how sorry I feel for my ex's new wife... poor girl...). It is just that I want more. I want to wake up next to the guy... share my deepest feeling with the guy... I want a relationship - and all the good, the bad and the ugly that comes with one.

But I don't want one with bootie call boy (nor does he want one with me - at least I hope not!)... but he isn't really getting the point.

I used to take 'breaks' from him by blocking him on my MSN and then if I felt like talking to him, I would unblock him. He never seemed to notice one way or another...

His IM's usually begin with something along the lines of "I'm horny". Meh. I am so over that. How about a hello?

When I was home a couple of weeks ago, he sent me a message... and I replied that I was out of town and that my step-dad was sick... he said he was sorry to hear it and then I logged off because I didn't feel like talking.

When I got back from BC, I got an IM (that for all of your sakes I will not repeat) and I said I wasn't in the mood because my step- dad had just passed. He said he was sorry to hear that, and then proceeded to tell me what he wanted to do to me.

Totally uncool right? Right.

Well... since then I have blocked him from my MSN, and I am thinking of removing him all together... because he just isn't getting it.

In the past week, he has sent me two messages through Lavalife (which means he had to pay to use his credits - I guess he recognized my profile picture while trolling for women - a total waste of money in my books), two private messages on Facebook, and two e-mail messages - none of which I have replied to.

Because really... I need more, I deserve more, and I am going to get more. One day. Soon. I hope.

And I am tired of feeling like a whore.

I seriously think he should read the book "He's Just Not That Into You" and replace all the he's with she's... or maybe I should read the book and try out some of the "moves" on him.

eHarmony just offered me a "buy 1 month, get 2 months free" deal... which I may sign up for just so I can see the pictures of those guys who I am matched with.

Why you ask?

Well, because Patrick, who I got into open communication with during the free weekend does not... how do I say this without sounding like a raging bitch that makes her choice of men based solely on looks alone (which I don't)... do it for me. I could have totally closed the match early on if I had seen the picture. And just so you can get an idea of what I am dealing with here... picture this:
His e-mails have been so-so... nothing earth shattering... but... his physical appearance just doesn't do it for me. At all.

So - now how do I not come across as a totally superficial person when I don't really reply to his e-mail with as much interest as I may have previously replied?

Because, he is going to know it is because he sent his picture.

I doubt that he will think it is because when I asked for an answer to the question "If you could do something totally out of character and remain anonymous what would you do?"... here was the answer...

Probably tell someone I had a huge crush on them. I mean, they wouldn't know who it was, right? Yes, I would like to meet someone, but I can be terribly shy at first. but I do open up. The reason I am probably still single at this point in my life is that I have been so shy in the past I never told anyone how I felt about them. To shy for my own good. Now you know. In time, there may be something I would like to tell you. But I think that conversation would overcome this fear of telling someone how you feel.

I should have guessed he was a 31-year-old virgin right then (okay... I don't actually know if the virgin part can be substantiated).

Carmen = online dating failure.

* The title of this post is an actual Comic Book Guy quote from the Simpsons... yeah... I am lame.
